In 1984, Derry Gorski and her late husband Bill chose to make Bethany their home. They raised three daughters, all of whom graduated from BCS and the Amity school system, and have three granddaughters who all live in town. Derry served as Registrar of Voters from 1987-1992, was a Girl Scout Leader from 1995 – 2005, and worked for the American Heart Association in government relations.
In 2003, Derry was elected as First Selectman. Since that time, Derry has always put Bethany’s interests first. She has renegotiated contracts to save taxpayer dollars, has secured millions in state and federal grant money, and has fought the state’s efforts to shift costs to our town.
- Saved $1.1 million over 10 years by renegotiating health insurance, information technology, trash and electricity contracts
- Worked with other towns to upgrade Amity pubic schools
- Helped Fire Department obtain new firehouse with modern equipment
- Expanded door to door transportation for seniors
- More than doubled tax relief for seniors
- Expanded tax credits for our Veterans
- First to apply for and win competitive grants for Bethany security over $2.5Â million to expand recreational facilities, improve public transportation for seniors and the disabled, increase public safety, increase energy efficiency
- Provided no-interest, no-payment loans for housing rehabilitation for moderate-income families
- Fought Gov. Malloy’s proposal to close the State Police Barracks in Bethany
